October had arrived

The leaves had turned orange and gold,

pumpkins were appearing on doorsteps, and every evening the sun disappeared a little earlier.

And somewhere, beneath a very old oak tree,

Something was waking up.

There was a rustle beneath the leaves.

Then another.

A purple hat slowly appeared. It was followed by two pointed ears, a mop of messy dark hair, and a small, freckled face.

Bramble opened his enormous brown eyes and yawned.

“October already?”

A leaf landed on his nose. Bramble sneezed. The leaf flew away.

“Definitely October.”

He climbed out from his little burrow

beneath the oak and brushed

the leaves from his green tunic.

He pulled on his orange mittens,

wrapped his orange and purple scarf around

his neck and pushed his floppy purple hat

firmly into place.

.The hat gave a soft wobble, which it always did when Bramble was excited.

Then he reached back into his burrow.

There was a clunk. An ouch. Another clunk.

And finally, Bramble appeared, holding a small pumpkin lantern

“There you are.”
