The Art of the Tale

About J. D. Nutbeam

J. D. Nutbeam is an English writer whose stories wander between the magical, the mysterious and occasionally the rather dark.

Inspired by the ancient woodlands, villages and history of the New Forest and surrounding Hampshire countryside, he writes across a range of genres. His work includes gentle children’s adventures, fantasy and folklore, supernatural tales, darker fiction and Victorian mystery.

At the lighter end of his writing are characters such as Harry the Elf, whose adventures are filled with friendship, humour and a little Christmas magic. Elsewhere, his stories venture into stranger territory, old forests, forgotten legends, ghosts, vampires and mysteries where things are rarely quite what they first appear.

The landscape of the New Forest is never far away. Its ancient trees, misty paths, old buildings and centuries of stories inspire both real and imagined worlds.

J. D. Nutbeam believes stories don’t always need to fit neatly into one genre. Sometimes they can be warm and funny. Sometimes unsettling. Sometimes they simply begin with a path disappearing between the trees and the question:

What might be waiting at the other end?
