When Autumn Falls
Autumn arrives without a sound,
A golden hush falls upon the ground,
Where summer's green fades
And sunlight softens into shade.
The leaves let go, but do not grieve,
They dance upon the air,
In russet red and amber bright,
They turn their ending into light.
The morning embraces a silver mist,
The hedgerows glow where frost has kissed,
And somewhere through the thinning trees
A robin sings into the chilled breeze.
We walk beneath the ever-changing sky,
And watch another season pass by,
Yet autumn seems to understand
That nothing stays within our hand.
So let the leaves fall where they may,
Let shorter hours close the day,
For even endings can be kind
When something beautiful remains behind.
And when the last leaf has flown,
And winter claims the woods its own,
We'll know that autumn wasn't gone…
It simply left its colours on.
