Pippy and the very Stubborn Wheelbarrow
Pippy the New Forest gnome woke early one sunny morning with a brilliant idea.
“I’m going to tidy my garden!” He smiled proudly. “What could go wrong?”
From somewhere nearby, a robin chirped. It sounded suspiciously like laughter.
Pippy filled his little wheelbarrow with leaves, sticks, and fallen pinecones.
“Easy does it,” he said.
He took one step. Then another. Then his boot landed on a pinecone.
Pop!
His feet flew into the air. The wheelbarrow rolled away. The leaves burst upwards like a green fireworks display. Pinecones bounced in every direction. Pippy landed gently in a pile of moss.
“Oh,” he sighed. “I forgot about that pinecone.”
Just then, Harry the Elf came walking along the forest path
“Good morning, Pippy!”
Pippy waved from the moss. “I meant to do that.”
Harry looked at the upside-down wheelbarrow. “Did you?”
Pippy thought for a moment. “No.”
Harry couldn’t help laughing. Together they gathered the leaves and filled the wheelbarrow again.
“This time,” Harry smiled, “let’s keep an eye on where we’re walking.”
Pippy nodded very seriously. “I shall.”
He pushed the wheelbarrow forward, looking carefully at the ground. He avoided every pinecone. Every root. Every stone.
“I’ve done it!” he cheered.
He was so busy watching the path… …that he walked straight into a low‑hanging tree branch.
Bonk!
His floppy blue hat spun through the air before landing neatly on Harry’s head.
Pippy blinked. Harry blinked.
Then they both burst into laughter.
“I suppose,” said Pippy, rubbing his head, “I should remember to look up as well.”
Harry handed him back his hat. “I think that’s an excellent idea.”
Just then, a squirrel appeared, picked up one of the escaped pinecones and scampered into the trees.
Pippy smiled. “Well… at least someone found a use for it.”
By lunchtime, the garden was beautifully tidy. Pippy stood back proudly to admire his work. Then he accidentally sat in his empty wheelbarrow. It rolled gently down the little hill.
“Not again!” he laughed as Harry jogged after him.
The wheelbarrow came to a gentle stop beside his tiny cottage. Pippy climbed out, dusted off his trousers and grinned.
“I think,” he said, “gardening is much more exciting than people realise.”
Harry laughed. “I don’t think anyone could make it quite as exciting as you do.”
The two friends shared a cheerful laugh as the birds sang overhead. And from that day on, whenever anyone in the New Forest heard a distant…
Crash! Boing! Oops!
…they smiled to themselves.
Because they knew Pippy the Gnome was probably having another perfectly ordinary day.
