Harry the Elf and the Mysterious Map

Harry had only been home at the North Pole for one day. One. Single. Day. He had just settled into his favourite chair with a mug of hot chocolate when there was a knock at the door.

Knock… knock… knock…

Harry opened it. Santa was standing outside with a great big smile.

“Morning, Harry.”

“Morning, Santa.”

“Fancy another adventure?”

Harry looked at his mug. Then at Santa. Then back at his mug.

“I haven’t even finished my hot chocolate.”

Santa laughed.

“It’ll still be warm when you get back.”

Harry wasn’t entirely convinced.

Santa handed him an old rolled‑up map tied with a bright red ribbon. Harry carefully unrolled it. It was covered with winding paths, little drawings of mountains, forests and rivers… and one enormous red X.

“Treasure?” Harry whispered.

“Perhaps,” Santa smiled. “Or perhaps not.”

Harry’s eyes sparkled.

“I’ll find out!”

Just then, Pudding the reindeer trotted over. He looked at the map. He looked at Harry. Then, before anyone could stop him…

Chomp.

He took one corner of the map into his mouth. Harry laughed.

“Pudding!”

The reindeer froze. The map hung from his mouth like a very important napkin. Santa raised an eyebrow.

“I don’t think he’s helping.”

Harry gently rescued the soggy corner.

“It’s alright,” he chuckled. “I don’t think he ate the treasure… yet.”

Just then, a gust of wind swept across the village. It curled around the rooftops like a playful ribbon. The map flew into the air.

“Oh no!”

Harry chased it. Past the bakery. Around the toy workshop. Between two snowmen. Over a sled. Under a string of Christmas lights. Every elf who saw the chase joined in. Soon half the North Pole was running after one very determined map.

Finally, it landed softly on Mrs Claus’s washing line. She smiled as she took it down.

“I think this belongs to someone.”

Harry laughed as he accepted it.

“Thank you.”

Santa folded the map carefully and tucked it back into Harry’s satchel.

“I have a feeling,” he said with a wink, “that this adventure is going to be a memorable one.”

Harry smiled.

“So do I.”

He looked at the great red X one more time.

“I wonder what’s waiting for us.”

Santa simply grinned.

“That’s tomorrow’s story.”

Harry laughed.

“I suppose I’d better finish my hot chocolate before anything else escapes.”

From somewhere across the village came a familiar voice.

“Has anyone seen my ladder?”

A crash followed. Harry smiled.

“It’s going to be one of those weeks.”

And together, Harry and Santa set off towards the beginning of a brand-new adventure.
